In the world of wellness, skincare has been my OG questline since I was a kid. I started this journey in elementary school, armed with the determination of a Level 1 adventurer trying to master a daunting dungeon (aka my oily/sensitive skin). Over time, I’ve learned that skincare isn’t about quick fixes; it’s about consistency. Think of it like grinding XP in your favorite RPG—daily effort adds up to glowing rewards.

Your skin is the largest organ of your body, a tireless protector that deserves some extra love and care. It’s time to give it the credit it deserves. Here’s a beefed-up skincare guide for anyone ready to unlock their glowing potential.

Me circa 2001 ish (I’m 14) and dedicated to my skincare routine even then.

1. Stick to Your Morning and Night Rituals

Your skincare routine is your daily grind for long-term wins. Washing, hydrating, and protecting your skin twice a day helps with cell renewal, balances oil production (oily-skin comrades, I see you!), and shields against pollution and aging.

💡 Pro Tip: Treat your routine like a sacred ritual. It’s a chance to connect with yourself. While cleansing, tell your reflection how stunning you are—it’s a confidence and charisma buff rolled into one.

2. Never Sleep in Your Makeup

Look, we’ve all been there. You roll into bed without washing your face after a long day. But trust me, making this a habit is like inviting breakouts and premature aging to set up camp on your face.

💡 Pro Tip: Keep a gentle cleanser handy to remove makeup, dirt, and pollution build-up before bed. It’s a small act of self-care that your future self will thank you for. If you’re looking for a product to help lift up your makeup easier, try Erase by Pomifera™ as a pre-cleanser (I haven’t tried this one yet, but I’ve heard great things and it’s on my next order. We’ll see if this stays in here once I try it).

3. Embrace the Weekly Face Mask

Face masks are the ultimate side quest. They hydrate, detoxify, and boost circulation for a refreshed, radiant look. For my fellow oily-skinned adventurers, clay masks are a game-changer. They pull out excess oil, leaving your skin balanced and happy.

💡 Pro Tip: Follow up with moisturizer! Oily skin can still get dehydrated, and neglecting hydration can make your skin produce even more oil to compensate. So lube up your face, start with a light moisturizer. I like Thayers: Let’s Be Clear when the budget’s tight, and YOUTH Moisture Lock Day Cream when I’m ballin’.

4. Exfoliate (Gently!)

Exfoliation removes dead skin cells, unveiling a fresher, brighter layer beneath and prepping your skin to absorb products more effectively. You can use a product specific for this like the Pomifera™ Restore Facial Exfoliant or a clean washcloth and your preferred cleanser (I use a face cloth most of the time just to keep the product clutter down).

💡 Pro Tip: Remember, be gentle! You’re not trying to mine diamonds out of your face—you’re nurturing your skin. Listen to your skin’s needs; if it’s getting irritated, scale back.

5. Silk Pillowcases: The Ultimate Loot

Silk pillowcases are worth the investment. They’re less absorbent than cotton, which means they don’t soak up your skincare products or moisture overnight. Bonus: they help reduce wrinkles and breakouts.

💡 Pro Tip: Change your pillowcase every 2–3 days. This one tweak reduced my adult breakouts by 80%. If you’re crafty, thrift silk nightgowns and repurpose them into pillowcases for a fiscally responsible win. This is the one I crafted from leftover material from a dress made (I don’t think it’s real silk but it’s silky and does the job very well).

6. Keep Your Hair in Check at Night

Long hair can sabotage your skincare efforts by absorbing your products or transferring product residue to your face. Plus, if you use a bonnet or a scarf your hair will be projected and you’ll probably have less breakage.

💡 Pro Tip: Sleep with your hair in a silk bonnet, scarf, or high bun to keep everything in place and bacteria-free.

7. Always Use SPF (Yes, Even during Winter)

SPF isn’t just for beach days. UV rays don’t take a break in colder months, and snow glare can intensify their effects. Plus, SPF protects against windburn for those of us braving subzero quests. I’m a big fan of the YOUTH™ BB Cream with SPF 30 or the YOUTH™ Age Defense Mineral Moisturizer SPF 30  –– it’s chemical-free and goes on with light coverage, plus it’s a moisturizer! Again, keeping the product clutter to a minimum with multi-use products!

💡 Pro Tip: Use multitasking products like BB creams with SPF to streamline your routine.

8. Avoid Tobacco Smoking

Tobacco smoke is like casting a curse on your skin. It introduces harmful toxins, accelerates aging, and impairs collagen production. If glowing, healthy skin is the goal, this habit has to go.

💡 Pro Tip: If smoking is part of your life, explore alternatives like herbal blends (mullein leaf is a great herbal smoke base) or other rituals that don’t harm your skin—or your health. I share some of my preferred smokes blends in the Patreon.

9. Limit Alcohol Consumption

Overindulging in alcohol can dehydrate your skin, causing wrinkles and inflammation over time. Too much can also weaken your skin’s antioxidant defenses, leaving it more vulnerable. That’s not to say you can’t have a tequila now and then, but keep it limited. I like to do the, 2 shots on a random Wednesday once every 3-4 months and a tribute to the Gods.

💡 Pro Tip: Moderation is key. Enjoy a drink now and then (I like to do the, 2 shots on a random Wednesday once every 3-4 months as a tribute to the Gods), but balance it with hydration and a good skincare routine.

Final Boss: Consistency Over Perfection

Your skincare journey isn’t about being perfect and what works for one person (even if you have the same skin type) does not mean it’s going to work for you—it’s about showing up for yourself every day and trying things until you find what works for you. Each little habit adds up to a big transformation over time. Ready to equip your skincare armor and take on this wellness quest? Your future glowing self is cheering you on!
