Why I Chose Wellness for Myself—and Why It Matters
Category:My interest in health started around level 17 in my personal campaign. Over time, I picked up enough knowledge to buff myself and a few party members against minor, annoying debuffs. But then, life hit me with a plot twist so wild it pushed health and wellness straight into my main questline.
Watching my grandparents age was like seeing the consequences of ignoring side quests in a game that would increase their max health bar. They were vibrant, strong characters who gradually lost their agility, needing more assistance as time went on to where my mom and I dreaded when the phone rang, hoping it wasn’t another call letting us know that Grandpa had fallen, again. It wasn’t just hard emotionally—it was a harsh reminder that every choice adds up, like skill points spent in a long campaign. I realized I didn’t want to reach my endgame regretting how I allocated mine.
That revelation set me on a journey. Slowly, I began to see that wellness isn’t about flawless gameplay; it’s about making intentional, even tiny, moves toward building a healthier future.
Wellness Isn’t Easy, and That’s Okay
Choosing wellness in today’s world can feel like playing a game on “Hard Mode.” Life is hectic, stress is real, and the temptations of fast, convenient, unhealthy options are endless. I’ve had my “respawn” moments—weeks where I’ve lived on caffeine, skipped workouts, and let chaos dictate my days.
But here’s the truth: you don’t have to 100% the game in one go. There are no trophies for perfection. Wellness is more about incremental upgrades—tiny wins that stack over time. My journey began with small steps: a morning walk here, replacing sugary snacks with a favorite fruit there, doing a 5 minute workout with weights and finding joy in the little victories.
Building a Future You’ll Thank Yourself For
What motivates me isn’t just avoiding the “bad ending.” It’s creating a legacy where I can keep exploring, thriving, and embracing the activities I love. I picture myself in my sixties, seventies, eighties and nineties, still hiking, adventuring, and living life on my terms—not sidelined by preventable issues and can barely get out of bed.
And it’s not just the future that matters; wellness improves the now. Investing in yourself today gives you more energy and joy to level up in the areas that matter—your family, your passions, and your everyday adventures.
