I get a good chuckle when I hear someone say, “I’m new to this whole nutrition thing. Where do I start.”

In reality, no one is new to this nutrition thing, it has been a part of your everyday life from the day you were conceived. The very structure of your body depends on nutrition. So, you’re not new to it, but you are new to really looking at it to see how you can be an advocate for your health. For that I congratulate you. Well done! You are in for a journey of a lifetime, which is what it should be.

First thing’s first, taking care of your nutrition is as much a mental game as it is a what you ingest game. Your mental state is critical. Please be easy on yourself as you are getting started. You are going to have crappy days, and you’re going to fudge it up. That’s okay, just don’t use that as an excuse to give up. One “bad” day does not have to mean you throw it all away. Start again tomorrow or in an hour. You’ve got this.

Let’s begin!

There are many things that you can read on the Internet that may suggest that you have to completely clean out your pantry, give up all things tasty and basically live a life of complete absence from anything delightful. That is simply not true. I’m here to tell you that it doesn’t have to be that complicated, overwhelming, expensive, wasteful and devastating.  When it comes to starting to take control of your nutritional needs the best thing to do from the get-go is to make sure your nutritional gaps are being filled and start with a simple supplement regime.

You might be thinking, “Oh Kristin, what the heck? Supplements really? Can’t I just eat really healthy to fill in my gaps?

The short answer, you would have to eat more than humanly possible to actually fill your nutritional gaps. You may be able to do that once you fill your reserves, but at the beginning, you are running in a deprived state. I know people who eat clean, clean, clean who still take their vitamins. Look at any ridiculously healthy person you know, and I bet you they take some kind of supplements. The reality is if you have lived any kind of modern lifestyle you are running on less than empty and restoring those nutrient stores is going to be critical to your success.

The biggest challenge most people that I have seen struggle with is that they just can’t seem to get past the cravings. Cravings are actually not something to dread and to be angry at, they are actually a very good indicator that your body is nutrient deficient. Filling nutritional gaps will make all the difference in helping you make good choices that are healthier for yourself and will help to curb, if not cut your cravings out. And making sure your cells are getting what they need is the first step to taking your nutrition in your hands. Until your nutritional gaps are fixed your body simply won’t function correctly.

We have this tendency to get mad at our cravings and shame ourselves for what we crave and giving in to it. But really we need to embrace them and learn to read and recognize them and what they’re doing. Cravings are a signal that you are deficient in nutrients. Your cells are signaling your body that you don’t have enough nutrients and so the cravings kick into that you go looking for food to fill that gap, it’s really that simple.

So how do you fill that gap? Well, you do that by making sure that we start with a simple supplementation program first. I am a big fan of the Prove It Challenge. It’s as simple as a strip and a shake a day to take your health in a whole new direction. But if you are looking for something simple a vitamin strip is a great place to start. And I’ll cover why I suggest a vitamin strip over just a singular multivitamin in a future post.

It’s amazing what happens when you start filling your nutritional gaps and giving your body what it needs. And to me, this is the first step in taking an intentional hands-on approach to your nutrition.  Stay tuned as we continue this journey of being an active creator of your health.
